Attending FOSDEM for the first time was an amazing experience, it was right into the heart of the open-source community. The event was full of energy, innovation, and collaboration, and I’m excited to share some highlights from our experience, especially our time at the DevPod stand and the talk I had alongside Hrittik, titled "Accelerating CI Pipelines: Rapid Kubernetes Testing with vCluster."
A Warm Welcome at FOSDEM
Walking into FOSDEM, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. As a first-timer, the scale of the event and the passion of everyone involved in open source was both inspiring and slightly overwhelming, in the best way possible. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just starting out, there’s an amazing energy that fuels creativity and innovation here. The stands are given free to open source projects for which you need to do the submissions, everything is led by a group of volunteers and even there is no registration, it's welcome and open to ALL!
We got our DevPod (Open source GitHub Codespaces) stand and it quickly became the hub for discussions about developer environments as soon as the event started. People faced challenges in their current organizations with obtaining remote developer environments that could run on any infrastructure of their choice. They found DevPod to be a very interesting solution to this problem.

Showcasing DevPod: Innovation at Your Fingertips
At the DevPod stand, we had the chance to interact with a diverse group of developers, enthusiasts, and industry experts. Visitors were drawn to our demos and discussions around unopinionated remote developer environments. Some of the key highlights included:
- Interactive Demos: We showcased how DevPod can empower developers to spin up ready-to-code environments in seconds, making remote collaboration and rapid iteration more accessible than ever.
- Live Sessions: Engaging with attendees in real time allowed us to understand the challenges developers face in today’s fast-paced development landscape, and provided valuable feedback on how we can continue to improve our offerings.
It was incredibly rewarding to see the curiosity and excitement around our work, and it reinforced our belief in the power of community-driven innovation.
Accelerating CI Pipelines with vCluster: A Talk to Remember
One of the standout moments of FOSDEM for me was co-presenting the talk "Accelerating CI Pipelines: Rapid Kubernetes Testing with vCluster" with Hrittik. In our session, we dove deep into the challenges of scaling CI pipelines in Kubernetes environments and demonstrated how vCluster (which helps you create virtual Kubernetes clusters on Kubernetes ) can be a game-changer for rapid testing. To my surprise, it was a full house!

Key Takeaways from the Talk
- Rapid Environment Provisioning: We explored how vCluster enables developers to quickly spin up isolated Kubernetes clusters and then do automated/manual testing. This dramatically reduces the time required for setting up test environments.
- Efficiency in CI Pipelines: By integrating vCluster into CI workflows, teams can execute tests in parallel, leading to faster feedback loops and more efficient resource usage.
- Enhanced Developer Experience: The ability to create disposable, consistent testing environments not only improves reliability but also empowers developers to experiment without the fear of disrupting critical services.
The talk was met with enthusiasm, sparking lively discussions and follow-up questions that extended well beyond the session. It was heartening to see such active engagement and genuine interest in improving CI/CD practices across the board. The need for a tool like vCluster was clear.
Lessons Learned and Future Directions
FOSDEM has been a reminder of the immense value of community and collaboration in the open source world. Here are a few reflections from the event:
- Community is Everything: The open exchange of ideas and the willingness to help one another solve complex problems are what make events like FOSDEM so special.
- Innovation is Driven by Collaboration: The interactions at the DevPod stand and during our talk have provided fresh insights and inspired new ideas that we’re eager to explore further.
- Continuous Learning: There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s from a seasoned expert or a fresh perspective from a fellow developer.
As we look forward to the next steps, we’re excited to integrate the feedback and ideas from FOSDEM into our projects at DevPod and beyond.
Final Thoughts
Here’s what Nicolas and Hrittik Roy have to say about the event in their own words:
Nicolas “It was my fourth FOSDEM; and the first one without talks. I’ve spoken so far in the Java room, in the Kotlin one, in the Observability one, and the API one. Not having to prepare a talk allows meeting people, exchanging ideas, learning new ones. If you have never been at FOSDEM, I invite you to come: it’s a unique conference in the conference landscape.”
Hrittik “FOSDEM is genuinely the most prominent open source festival. This was my first time, and with the DevPod Stand and our talk, it was awesome to meet such a huge developer audience who are innovating in different aspects of IT. We saw excellent traction on new use cases on DevPod and specific questions on vCluster during our talk. I can't wait to be here again”
Attending FOSDEM for the first time was a milestone achieved for me personally. From the vibrant conversations at the DevPod stand to the engaging discussions during our talk on accelerating CI pipelines with vCluster, every moment was a reminder of why the open-source community continues to thrive. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn, and share with so many brilliant minds.
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to sharing more updates as we continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of development!
Stay tuned, keep coding, and see you at KubeCon!
